Golden Grounds: The Kaffeeklatsch Celebrates 50 Years
The Kaffeeklatsch first opened on May 17, 1976. Owners Grant and Kathryn patterned their business after the San Francisco coffee houses they visited while living in California. DHI had the opportunity to talk with Katie Manos, one of the managers at Kaffeeklatsch and learn more about the shop’s rich, full-bodied history!

A Flavor and Feeling, You Can’t Find Anywhere Else
Kaffeeklatsch has been part of downtown for 50 years, what do you think has kept people coming back all this time? There are probably multiple reasons for our customers coming back for so long. The antique cast iron roaster we use and our signature roast level gives our coffees a unique flavor and "je ne sais qua". I think a large part of it is being welcoming and willing to meet people where they are in their coffee journey without making anyone feel uncool or embarrassed for what they enjoy. Coffee is extremely personal, any two customers could be looking for a completely opposite tasting experience from each other, and many customers come in without knowing what they like at all. The Kaffeeklatsch is willing to listen and help navigate our options to help you find something based on your unique taste. And the smell probably doesn't hurt.
What’s one memory or moment from the past 50 years that really stands out to you? With his recent passing, we've been thinking a lot about Microwave Dave and the epic Blues jams that were a staple back in the days when the Kaffeeklatsch bar was open. While it may not have been one specific memory or moment, those nights seem to have made a great impact on many local musicians. We look forward to honoring Microwave Dave and his role in The Kaffeeklatsch's history with a Blues jam in the former Kaffeeklatsch Bar for the 50th Anniversary.

Evolving with Huntsville, One Customer at a Time
How has downtown Huntsville changed since you first opened, and how has the shop evolved with it? Downtown Huntsville has changed so much over the last 50 years! When the store first opened, downtown was mostly law offices and The Kaffeeklatsch was one of very few places to sit down and eat. Over the years, downtown Huntsville has really flourished and there are many restaurants and coffee shops. And while downtown was expanding, The Kaffeeklatsch began to specialize in roasting exclusively. Over the decades, we have cut our food service entirely and cut our drink service down to just one offering: hot drip coffee to-go. This allows us to focus on acquiring and roasting the best coffees possible.
Have you had any longtime customers whose stories have stuck with you over the years? The stories we seem to hear most these days are of near-death experiences with the stairs to the bathroom after a few too many drinks. Jokes aside, we do hear great stories all the time of customers whose parents brought them into the store as children and they've been coming in ever since. Those are always really lovely to hear.
Rooted in Comfort, Looking to the Future
What do you hope people feel when they walk into Kaffeeklatsch today? When walking into the Kaffeeklatsch, we hope that people will feel safe, welcome, and encouraged in their pursuit of the perfect cup of coffee for them.
As you celebrate this milestone, what does the future look like for Kaffeeklatsch? We'd like to see The Kaffeeklatsch continue sourcing high-quality coffees and roasting them fresh for many years to come! There are some changes behind the scenes that will be made soon, but we aren't quite ready to announce anything yet.
Downtown Huntsville, Inc. is excited to celebrate this important milestone with Kaffeeklatsch. For 50 years, Kaffeeklatsch has been more than just a place to grab a cup of coffee, it’s been a cornerstone of connection, conversation, and community in downtown Huntsville. With the DHI office located just across from Kaffeeklatsch, it’s a joy to catch the aroma of freshly ground coffee while walking through downtown. From its carefully crafted roasts to its welcoming approach for every kind of coffee drinker, the shop has created an experience that keeps people coming back generation after generation. As downtown continues to grow and evolve, Kaffeeklatsch remains rooted in what matters most: quality, authenticity, and making everyone who walks through the door feel at home. Here’s to the next chapter, and many more cups to come.
